Mom Admits To Using Crack Before Crashing Car With Baby Inside On I-84: Police

A routine traffic crash quickly turned into a serious criminal investigation when police say a local woman admitted to using crack cocaine before getting behind the wheel—with a toddler in the car.

Elizabeth Burnham, 35, of East Hartford, faces a litany of charges following her arrest on Monday morning, Feb. 24, Connecticut State Police said.

Troopers responded to a two-car crash on the exit 58 off-ramp from I-84 around 10:15 a.m. They found Burnham had rear-ended another vehicle because she “was not able to stop in time,” according to authorities.

No injuries were reported at the scene.

But while speaking with Burnham, troopers noticed clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and delayed movements, police said. She then admitted to using crack cocaine before driving, according to officials.

Burnham failed a sobriety test, which led police to uncover suspected fentanyl, suspected crack cocaine, and a glass pipe consistent with drug use, according to authorities.

Police say a 2-year-old child was in the car at the time of the crash. A family member was contacted to take custody of the toddler, and the Department of Children and Families was notified, officials confirmed.

Burnham was arrested and charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance, use of drug paraphernalia, and risk of injury to a minor.

She was later released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on March 17.
